Every civilization has honored the dead, but the modern Halloween we know traces directly back to ancient Ireland and the Celtic festival of Samhain. Over 3,000 years ago, the Celts observed the end of the harvest season as a sacred transition, when the barrier between the living and the dead grew thin.
During Samhain, Druids would parade through villages with offerings to appease wandering spirits. People left sweets and treats outside their homes to keep the dead and the demons they feared from entering. This ancient custom became what we now call trick or treating.
Samhain also marked the symbolic death of the sun god, who would be reborn during the winter solstice, a belief that later blended with Yule, or modern Christmas. The Mother Earth goddess, said to sleep during this time, was “repaid” through blood sacrifice for the year’s harvest.
What began as a night of fear and offerings to pagan gods evolved into one of the most popular holidays in the world but the roots of Halloween are far older, and far darker, than most people realize.
