We count six new moons from Abib. When the seventh new moon appears in the western sky after sunset, we know it is Yom Teruah, the Day of Trumpets. The visible new moon can appear on one of two evenings, so we don’t always know exactly when it will be seen.
That’s why Yom Teruah is called “the day and hour no man knows” not because it’s a mystery forever, but because it depends on actual sighting, not fixed calculations.
In ancient times, when the new moon was spotted, the watchmen would announce it to the judges, the shofar would be blown, and all work would cease.
This feast begins the fall appointed times, and prophetically points to the return of the Sovereign,YaHuWaH, when the shofar will sound, and the righteous will be gathered.
