A lot of you were surprised when I told you that Ubisoft made a Batman game once, and personally, I was further surprised that it was pretty fun! Now imagine the surprise when I hear that not only were they able to give it another go, but that their second attempt would feature a higher budget, higher ambitions, and tighter gameplay. Yea, needless to say I was excited, but what is this mysterious Ubisoft Batman game? I’m sure you’re imagining it’s an open world game where you hack radio towers to fill the map, and you stealth through different outposts to liberate Gotham. Get this; it’s a beat-em-up, and a pretty solid one too. Batman Vengeance was Ubisoft Montreal's first big project, taking place in the universe of Batman The Animated Series, Batman Rise of Sin Tzu, is the follow up, featuring better graphics, gameplay, and a better story; so how does this game hold up against the other batman titles? The answer is, mostly well.
Let’s get visuals out of the way first. Cutscenes look even better, the models all look great, the game runs well, and… what's this? 4 characters on the main screen? If you’re thinking what I’m thinking, you're right, you can play as 4 different members of the bat family, and they all look great, except for my favourite; Batgirl. Her smile is oddly uncanny, and she holds it, for a long time. Other characters have cool designs too, with Scarecrow in particular looking actually quite scary. Other favourites from the rogues gallery make it here, like Clayface, who's voiced by Ron Pearlman, and genuinely feels a little out of place here, as if his voice sounds too good, but if we’re on the topic of good voices, then you know your boy Kevin Conroy is here, and it’s always a treat to hear him.
As this game is a beat-em-up, it’s standard that it features a lot of long corridors, but I think the environments generally keep up, at least, until the end. The game's penultimate level takes place in a sewer, and then eventually in Arkham Asylum which might sound intriguing, I mean, when I think of the asylum I always imagine the gothic architecture and haunted atmosphere, but instead, it’s just a very standard, barebones madhouse. It’s a shame that the game finishes on such a low note when it comes to environments, and the gameplay, aaand the story, aaand the boss fights, but you know what let’s just ignore that other stuff and focus on what works here, which still is presentation, because not only are the levels interesting from a visual standpoint, but they also include an absolute banger soundtrack that has no reason to go this hard.. You’ll be hearing most of it in the background of this video, but just damn, these are really good. Sure, some of it is a little outside of batman wheelhouse, like someone adlibbing “whos gonna rock the place” in the background doesn’t quite give dark and broody, but for a beat-em-up, I think it works.
Batman is a character that has dominated the gaming sphere since the inception of Batman Arkham. Of course, the last developer we would associate with the character would be Ubisoft. A Ubisoft Batman game, to many, is assumedly an open world, but not quite. This is a Batman animated series game that is shockingly a beat em up. While the wait for a new Batman Arkham game is long, while I wait for the next Arkham game, I've found that these games based on Batman The Animated Series, more accurately, Batman The New Adventures, are a perfect encapsulation and adaptation of Batman Animated Series. This is the other time ubisoft made a batman game, called Batman Rise of Sin Tzu. This Batman Rise of Sin Tzu retrospective, Batman Rise of Sin Tzu review, and Batman Rise of Sin Tzu critique will cover the games quality, availability, and if I think it warrants Ubisoft to take another crack at the IP.
