A dairy farmer shares his initial hesitation and eventual decision to transition to organic farming, overcoming fears of giving up conventional methods like antibiotics and pesticides. The switch not only improved farm practices and productivity but also significantly enhanced the farmer's knowledge and connection to the biological processes of agriculture, emphasizing the return to a more natural and sustainable approach.
Jon Bansen descends from a long line of dairymen. When he took over from his father, his was not an organic farm. That meant that he relied upon chemical fertilizers to maintain his pasture, pesticides to control the pests and antibiotics when the cows got sick, among other common practices.
As Bansen explains in this clip (filmed in 2007), industrial agriculture involves a lot of 'lotions and portions' and has more to do with industry than with biology.
When Jon Bansen switched over to organic, he was able to pay closer attention to nature and farm in a much more ecological and humane manner.
Note: it's good to see names on dairy cows in place of numbers. No, they are not pets, but it shows a respect for livestock that is also an important part of the equation.
Bansen considers his decision to switch over to becoming an organic dairy as one of the best decisions in his life.
