Hidden inside One Utama Shopping Centre in Kuala Lumpur is Next Gen Theme Park, an arcade with one of the most interesting machine selections I've found in Malaysia.
The biggest attraction for arcade enthusiasts is the **Dance Dance Revolution Gold cabinet**, which is believed to be the only DDR machine currently available in Kuala Lumpur. The arcade also has an unusual Chinese drum rhythm game called Jazz Hero II featuring a surprising selection of music, including many unofficial tracks, creating a very different experience from the usual Japanese rhythm games.
What makes Next Gen interesting is that the machine selection feels completely unpredictable. Unlike large arcade chains with identical layouts across every location, this place seems to have a more random collection of games. You never really know what you'll find until you walk inside, which gives it a unique character.
However, the arcade also has some strange issues. There is no way to purchase credits directly with a Visa or Master Card, and there are no convenient ways to break larger banknotes. Instead, players need to find an ATM, withdraw cash, and use the change machine. When I tried asking staff if they could help break a larger note, I was simply told to ask another customer, which was a surprising experience considering the arcade contains thousands of dollars worth of machines. It seems really unprofessional.
The pricing is around RM4-5 per play, which many locals consider expensive. Compared with arcades in Europe or America, it feels fairly normal, but for Malaysia it is definitely on the higher side.
