Most people visit Melaka for its UNESCO World Heritage streets. I came for something completely different... one of the most unbelievable retro arcades I've ever found.
Wonderland in Melaka is packed with original 1990s arcade hardware that has almost disappeared everywhere else. The biggest surprise? An incredible 22 original Daytona USA twin cabinets, alongside Time Crisis, House of the Dead, Namco Suzuka 8 hours, Street Fighter, King of Fighters, candy cabinets, and dozens of other genuine arcade machines from the golden era. After visiting more than 800 arcades worldwide, this is one of the most unique collections I've ever seen.
But there's another side to Wonderland. Many machines have seen better days, with worn controls, broken parts, colour-matched duct tape keeping cabinets together, and maintenance that struggles to keep up with the size of the collection. It creates a strange feeling - excitement at discovering one of the world's greatest surviving retro arcades, mixed with concern about how much longer a place like this can survive.
If you're interested in preserving arcade history, this is an arcade you'll want to see while it still exists.
