Apple announced four new machines. The M6 Mac mini starts at $900 now, and the Mac Studio with the M5 Ultra opens at $5,500. But buried under all of that, the polishing cloth quietly dropped from $19 to $9.

Here's why it's funny. Every price increase on Macs this year traces back to memory. RAM costs went vertical because of AI data center demand, and Apple passed it straight to you. A cloth has no RAM in it, so it's the one thing on the whole store that isn't on fire, which makes it the only thing they could move the other way.

Take it to 2TB and thats a $1,000 upgrade, so youre paying more for the drive than for the computer the drive lives in. Apple has always charged a premium on storage, but this is the first time the upgrade quietly became the more expensive half of the purchase. My advice: put the money in RAM instead, because RAM is soldered to the chip and you can never add it later. Storage you can add over Thunderbolt for a fraction of the Apple tax.
