What is creativity, really?
In this episode of Field Notes, I explore whether there is an objective truth to creativity, not just as artistic talent, genius, or cultural impact, but as a way of interacting with reality.
We often imagine creativity as something reserved for the greats: Da Vinci, Spielberg, Mozart, or the rare individuals who push culture forward in obvious, world-changing ways. But I think that definition can stop ordinary people from beginning their own creative journey.
This video looks at creativity as exploration: the act of opening reality, testing novelty, and finding new ways to interact with the world. It also explores mastery as the opposite but equally important force: the act of refining, stabilising, and turning creative discoveries into repeatable forms.
Society needs both. We need the explorers who break new ground, and we need the builders, maintainers, and masters who make those discoveries useful, reliable, and lasting.
Along the way, I reflect on creative work, self-actualisation, Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, the pressure to compare yourself to historical greats, and how new tools, workflows, software, and AI continue to expand what creative people can do.
