A blizzard was going strong as engine number 5 approached the unique bridge that traversed a small ravine a few hundred yards east of the train station at Ashtabula, Ohio. Well behind schedule, the two engines that were pulling the trailing passenger cars were struggling to move through the mounds of snow and those on board were anxious to escape to better weather.
The iron frame of the bridge creaked as the front engine edged onto it, and the groan of metal on metal echoed on the surrounding hills. Both engines had just crossed, with the front engine pulling off the western abutment when the sound of the bridge snapping exploded into the dark night.
