The United States of America has greatly expanded as a nation since the days of the thirteen original colonies but what are the most expensive territories ever bought by the USA? One of the earliest and most expansive purchases in American history was the Louisiana territory taken from France, which covered nearly 800,000 sq mi. or around a third of the land area of the continental United States for $18 million, or around $500 million adjusted for inflation today. This was a pretty good deal at less than a dollar an acre (where else would you be able to get a deal like that) but this pales in comparison to the purchase of Alaska, which was slightly smaller than Louisiana Territory and was even more cost efficient at only 36 cents an acre. There have been many other public and private land transactions in American history and we'll look at some of the most expensive here. Thanks for watching
