The Leningrad Heroic Defense Monument built is the first sight you see if you arrive in Saint Petersburg from the south, on the way from Pulkovo airport. This unique monument commemorates the great achievements of the Soviet people during the glorious siege and victory in one of the most devastating wars of mankind.

The Leningrad Heroic Defense Monument was built during the 1970s, designed by S. Speransky and V. Kamensky and carved by M. Anikushin. Many volunteers take part in the work - not only the citizens of Leningrad, but people from other cities as well, and even from other countries. The monument was opened on May 9, 1975, the 30th anniversary of Victory in World War II. The underground passage was not completed on time and opened later, in 1978.

The Leningrad Heroic Defense Monument consists of 3 main parts:
"Square of the Victors", featuring 26 bronze statues. These are Soldiers, Pilots, and Civilians who defend the city. They are looking towards Pulkovo Heights, where the line of defense against the Nazis is located.

The center is a 48 m high granite obelisk with a statue of Soldiers and Workers placed on its pedestal. They represented the unity of the armed forces and the Leningrad settlement in a heroic city defense.

The open memorial hall is surrounded by a broken ring, which signifies the removal of the Siege, and the beautifully crafted statues in the center. They created a powerful emotional impression of all the pain and suffering experienced by the Leningrad during that tragic time.
