A Kim Pilger and Glen Clark Collaboration
And now for something completely different!!
I had a chance recently to be part of a long distance collaboration. My good buddy Kim Pilger is a Canadian based in Vietnam and he created this song as a kind of homage to the music of Pink Floyd.
Having heard some of Kim's music before, when he asked me to collaborate with him on this track I jumped at the chance.
Kim has created a series of songs with a rather quirky concept around a dysfunctional band called 'Well Oiled Machine' whose unpredictable lead singer, Phoenix, is often at odds with the rest of the band.
What you have here is a recently unearthed tape which was secretly recorded during one of the band rehearsals. They were tinkering around with some Pink Floyd music when Phoenix just had to share his opinion...
This project was so much fun to work on and what started off as a straight forward piece of music soon turned into a game of 'Spot The Easter Egg'.
The keen-eared listener will pick up loads of references to random Pink Floyd songs which we scattered liberally throughout the piece. Some are as plain as the writing on the wall. Others may be obscured by clouds.
How many can you spot?? Hint, there's over 20.
Kim sings lead vocals and created all the wonderful layered synth sounds. He also played the Wish You Were Here part along with some additional lead guitars.
I simply added the ear candy. Backing vocals, a couple of lead guitar parts, some bass and the acoustic intro of Is There Anybody Out There?
My 6 year old daughter did her best impression of the wee voice at the start of Goodbye Blue Sky.
Oh yes. And then there are the Sound effects. Most of the sound effects you hear are me. The Bird song, Wind, Sheep, Dogs, Female Groupie and any other random voices are all just me speaking, whistling, barking into a microphone.
Our original video for this song was totally awesome but you won't get to see it sadly because someone claimed the rights to the royalty free footage we used and the content was blocked. So I just went with Plan B and made a quick sketch of a tape machine in Procreate and did some really bad animation on it. Videos are nice - but the music is the way more important.
This one goes out to those of us who are Pink Floyd fans. But even if you're not, we hope you get some enjoyment from Phoenix and Well Oiled Machine...
