The clockwork diorama dates from c.1870 and features two dancers in a mirrored ballroom. The scene is illusory due to the angled mirrors which make it appear as if the room is full of many dancers especially when viewed by candlelight as it would originally have been. The maker is Gustave Vichy of Paris who was one of the finest makers of automata.
