Pliosaurs are the quintessential prehistoric sea monster: massively built, powerful swimmers with skulls the size of boats and teeth that could double as railroad spikes. While most of us were introduced to this group of marine reptiles by the fictionalized Walking With Dinosaurs Liopleurodon, a 150-tonne, 25-meter behemoth that turned out to be based on a sauropod vertebra, pliosaurs have gained more traction in popular media on their own merits. This video examines the megapliosaurs: those giants among the giants, the pliosaur species whose maximum body mass matches or exceeds 5000 kilograms.
