Gilles de Rais was a French medieval nobleman and a war hero who fought alongside Joan of Arc in 1429, but he had a nasty little secret and is now remembered as being one of the first recorded serial killers.
He sent out his servants to find suitable peasant children to abduct. The trial documents state that de Rais used secret rooms around his chateau where he sodomised the children before beating them to death. He was said to stare into their eyes as he did this before decapitating their bodies. He kept the children’s heads on display and would often kiss his favourites.
There was an investigation into his crimes after he kidnapped a local priest during a dispute. At trial he was accused of being obsessed with the occult and of using the children’s limbs in rituals. It was thought that he murdered up to 150 boys over an eight-year period. Found guilty de Rais and two of his accomplices were hanged in1440.
