The Macintosh IIsi was launched as a lower-cost alternative in the Macintosh II series. To keep costs down, Apple used more electrolytic capacitors, and the surface-mount electrolytic capacitors from the early 90s are past their expected lifetime. In addition, despite the power supply being made by Sony, the capacitors in it are also known to leak (though I can't help think "cost tweaking" by Apple led Sony to use lower grade capacitors).

Will I successfully tune-up one of the IIsi floppy drives? Will I find a good floppy disk in my box? Will I find my hot glue gun so I can tack the two bodge wires? You'll have to watch to find out!

![My UMC U5SX 486-33F: Does Windows 95 or 98 Detect It as a Pentium MMX? (Computerized Start™ Live)
Youve probably heard of Intel and AMD processors, as both manufacturers are still in business today. If youve been into computing long enough, youve probably also heard of Cyrix. All three companies made 486 processors for Socket 1-3 systems.
But did you know that UMC also made 486 processors? No? That partly might be because Intel sued patent infringement, and as a result of the settlement of the case, UMC had to withdraw their processors from the US market. That might also be because they only made 486SX-era processors, not leaving a huge window for sales in other markets; Wikipedia mentions that they did have a clock-doubled version in production, but only engineering samples existed.
Speaking of Wikipedia, someone has added a claim with no footnote or citation:
Due to an error in the microcode, Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition identifies some processors as an Intel Pentium MMX which could cause the operating system and software running within it to crash or exhibit undefined behavior.

To which I have to say, [citation needed].
Since I now have a UMC Green CPU, specifically the UMC U5SX 486-33F, I can actually try to put this to the test... or all the Windows installs will put me to the test! Well start with Windows 95 as a control, then upgrade to Windows 98 [First Edition], and finally attempt the update to Windows 98SE.
For science, and #DOScember! (Windows 9x is basically a GUI running on top of MS-DOS.)
Will earlier Windows versions also show an incorrect processor identification? Will Windows 98SE detect my UMC 486 as a Pentium MMX? Or will I have trouble installing Windows 98SE on this unsupported system configuration? Youll have to watch to find out!

![COMPUTER Repair: There is a Hidden Fault Causing Zero Page RAM Issues... (Computerized Start™ Live)
Im nearing completion of my restoration of COMPUTER, the name I have given to my Apple ][+ clone made by MCA of Japan... that is, if the silk screen on the motherboard can be trusted. And Im going for a restoration here, with exceptions made for adding a Super Serial card and any expansion cards needed to make the ones that were included work.
Tuesday, I was feeling confident that the MCA 128K RAMCARD (a clone of the Saturn Systems 128K RAM Card) was repairable, and we have potentially repaired it. When I put the 128K RAMCARD in slot 0 and ran Computer Inspector, I got a memory error; when I removed the card, the error went away.
The plot thickened when I found and installed my Dead Test card, as Dead Test was consistently reporting zero page errors. And sure enough, when I used the Retro Chip Tester to test some of the 4116s, I found 5 out of 6 that were marked marginal that either fail the pre-test or at bit zero. But they werent in the zero page.
The plot thickened even more when, after replacing those chips, I can now occasionally get Dead Test to run if I power cycle it after an initial zero page issue.
Will I find more bad 4116s? Will I find a bad logic chip? Will I decide to not trust the new power supply? Or will it be an issue with the reset circuit? Youll have to watch to find out!
