This was a fun one to write. I can't quite explain how, but something about it just feels "church-y". When I started working on the map (Get Me to God's Country, bonus points if you know what that's referencing), the church was the very first thing I made.
Naturally, I wanted a midi that kind of invoked this rural spirituality. The "choir aahs" and "echo drops" patches were meant to emulate the sound of, well, a choir. That's not something that conveys very well in MIDI, imo, but I think it does the job here. I also used a steel string guitar, and of course, the organs, to evoke the vibe of something church-related without writing something that sounded like a hymn. I think overall, the song has a sense of gravitas and drama that's fitting of the combat in the map, and pairs very well with the church itself (especially when it comes into view the first time).
The song title, by the way, is in part a tip of the hat to Doomkid's band, The Devilz Work (although the phrase "the lord's work" is common enough parlance that it's obviously a nod to that as well).
