So here's a fun one. Myolden reached out to me and asked if I'd be willing to compose the menu, intermission, and story MIDIs for Doom 2 in Rural Only, and I was pretty stoked about that. At that point I'd received a few one off requests from folks, but this was the first time I'd be leaving a major mark on a project.
I dunno about you all, but I do think that the title song of a WAD leaves a first impression and contributes toward setting the tone. Amusingly enough, I had some ideas for that track, but on a lark I wanted to chase an idea I was having and wrote this one first, without being asked. This was one of those fever pitches that kind of sweeps you away and I think I wrote the major strokes of this in one sitting.
I put particular focus on instruments that would lend to that rustic, country twang vibe. I wanted a melody and energy that would be good to kick off a wad with; something upbeat but not too intense.
The harmonica solo was something I wrote to try and hopefully sound like something you'd actually play on a harmonica. I'm not really an expert on that instrument or anything, but a major element of it is hearing the breathing in and out for fast passages, which I tried to imitate as best I could in the MIDI format.
Overall, I really loved how this one turned out, and when I shared it with myolden he was immediately on board with using it for his map. It also gave me some foundation to build the sounds of the rest of the MIDIs with, so there's hopefully some consistency across them.
