In the late 1940s and early 1950s, the French military began exploring concepts for lightweight tank destroyers. The objective was to develop a cheap, mobile, and simple vehicle capable of destroying heavy Soviet tanks like the IS-3 and IS-4. Heavy armor was deemed not important, with protection limited to resisting small arms fire.
By 1953, the military issued a formal set of requirements, inviting proposals from major French manufacturers such as Renault and Hotchkiss, along with a lesser-known submission by engineer Even from the small, inexperienced firm Etablissements Brunon-Valette.
Most early designs, including Even’s, used recoilless guns - a weapon type that had gained popularity in the later stages of World War II. These guns offered considerable firepower and could be easily fitted on light vehicles, as their lack of recoil meant the tank superstructure didn’t have to be as bulky to absorb an otherwise stronger recoil force.
However, their poor accuracy at long range soon became a serious drawback. By 1955, the French military determined that recoilless guns were unsuitable for tank warfare, particularly in the context of a potential conflict with the Eastern Bloc. The program was subsequently revised to focus on conventional guns, and in July 1955 it received its official name: Engin Léger de Combat.
