Even with their twin turret layouts and machine gun armament of only machine guns, the M2A2 and M2A3 reflected a persistent effort by the US Army to modernize its armored force.
Despite being outdated by the outbreak of World War 2, the M2A2 and M2A3 tanks provided excellent chassis and components for future tanks. By using them, American combined arms doctrine was modernized, and tank crews were trained for overseas service. As the US Army worked towards developing an effective tank, the M2A2 and M2A3 tanks were useful stepping stones.
