To address the limitations of earlier designs, the Germans developed the Panzer III Ausf. D. This model marked the culmination of their early, somewhat experimental attempts to develop a medium tank. Compared to its predecessors, the Panzer III Ausf. D incorporated several improvements, most notably the redesign of the rear engine compartment and the introduction of a slightly modified 8-wheel suspension. This series was produced in somewhat larger, though still limited, numbers compared to the earlier versions. The Panzer III Ausf. D also had the longest service life, remaining in action until 1941 and possibly even beyond.
