Trader Vic’s was once a massive international restaurant empire, with locations around the world and a huge influence on the tiki movement. Today, only a handful remain, making the Emeryville location a remarkable time capsule of that era.
In this episode, I head to Trader Vic’s Emeryville to explore the history behind this legendary restaurant, from Victor Bergeron’s original Hinky Dinks in Oakland to the Trader Vic’s empire that followed. We’ll take a look at the incredible South Pacific décor, the artifacts and carvings that fill the restaurant, and the stories behind some of the most iconic pieces.
This is more than just a tiki restaurant. It’s a surviving piece of tiki history.

To make Steven Cranes Jet Pilot cocktail:
½ oz fresh lime juice
½ oz grapefruit juice
½ oz cinnamon-infused sugar syrup
½ oz falernum
1 oz dark Jamaican rum
¾ oz gold Puerto Rican rum
¾ oz 151-proof Demerara rum
1 dash Angostura bitters
6 drops Pernod
Mix on high for about 6 seconds. Pour into a double-olde fashioned glass.
