This ocean simulator has been making waves—literally and figuratively—at Scripps Oceanography since 2022.
The Scripps Ocean-Atmosphere Research Simulator, or SOARS, is the world’s most sophisticated instrument of its kind, enabling scientists to get a preview of the oceanic and atmospheric conditions of the future, in which climate is altered even further by human activities
"We're currently running a two-week campaign to look at sea spray as a function of temperature," said Raymond Leibensperger III, a PhD student in climate sciences. "SOARS is important because it allows us to study a lot of environmental conditions, but in the laboratory, so we can have a lot of unparalleled control which lets us look at things that are otherwise really hard to characterize outside the lab."
