As fires raged in Los Angeles in early January, NOAA Ship Reuben Lasker was off the coast conducting a regularly scheduled survey for the California Coastal Oceanic Fisheries Investigations (CalCOFI), a 75-year-old science program that has made California's coastal waters the most extensively studied in the world. CalCOFI is augmenting its regular sampling mission to collect and analyze more of the toxic ash that coated the sea surface as seen in this video. That the ash came from urban sources such as household chemicals and building materials meant the episode warranted additional study to understand the effects of toxic materials on ocean ecosystems.
