In 1969, the crew of Scripps Oceanography research platform FLIP had to temporarily abandon it as it faced ocean swells reaching nearly 80 feet off Hawaii. Because FLIP remains motionless in its vertical orientation and does not bob in the water, waves came within two feet of the top of the platform. As seen from a Navy support vessel, an orange raft is deployed to take personnel to safety.
