The Keys To Paradise is a three-volume set, comprising "The Flame Key", "The Skeleton Lord's Key", and "The Key of Ice and Steel", by Robert E. Vardeman. This epic fantasy, published in 1986, is what I consider to be a "ripping good yarn"; an easy read, with a simple but action-packed story well-told. The relaxed prose, linear narrative, and clearly defined structure make this an ideal book to curl up with on a stormy, winter night. It isn't high art, nor is it pulp fantasy. It's not scholarly, but it's not dumb either. It's a nice, middle-of-the-road fantasy adventure with interesting, likable characters, and a story that never slows down or gets tiresome. It's one of my go-to books when I'm in need of a little familiarity and comfort.
