RUNNING ON FUMES VIDEO

‘Fishy Mansions’ - background stills and Pat fish footage – Dhiren Basu
The intention had been to shoot a promo video featuring Pat himself. When he left us
unexpectedly, making a video featuring another human being seemed inconceivable.
I decided to try and interpret the song, including things relevant to Pat’s life and likes . Those who knew him well will be able to spot them all so I’m hoping they will find some smiles from such a surreal memorial.
Luckily, I happened to have a tiny room and a town square, ready built to Shoot a video with ‘Bid’ , from Uk band, ‘The Monochrome Set’. All I had to do was add my fish, an intelligent looking Elephant, (bought after many, many hours searching on Ebay ) and, of course, his new album and favourite beer.
Pats housemate and friend, Dhiren Basu, kindly sent photographs of the mantelpiece and bookshelf from ‘Fishy Mansions’. These are the backdrops for some scenes along with the street he lived on, ‘Fishcoteque’ chip shop and ‘Alaska Studios’ in Waterloo, England.
I had hoped to feature more footage of Pat himself but when I assembled all the versions of ‘Running On Fumes’, from his ‘Fishy Mansions’ gigs, I realized how much the song had evolved, with different verses, keys and styles. Nothing synced, musically, with the studio version, but along with the chat before and after new songs, the videos remain some of the finest things to evolve from UK lockdown. (They are all now available to watch on The Jazz Butcher website.)
I shot the animation for the video at a low frame rate and put some digital motion blur on afterwards, to give it a dreamy, retro-kids tv look . In reality, this was, partly, due to time constraints and the challenges of trying to direct a drunk elephant and some delinquent stunt- fish. As with life, there were no real storyboards involved - They all just did what they could to navigate the chaos & get to the gig. I think Pat would have liked that.
