If Penal Substitution is true, then the innocent would have taken the punishment for the guilty. A refutation against PSA is that this cannot happen.

However, we see that, in fact, it does happen. The innocent can take punishment for the guilty. Besides, Jesus took on the guilt of our sin (II Corinthians 5:21), although He was not guilty based on his own actions.

For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. (2 Corinthians 5:21)
