The completely impartial, definitely-not-leaning-to-the-left, taxpayer-funded ABC is in a bit of a quandary.
On one hand, look at how they reported the recent Belfast attack, where a Sudanese asylum seeker attacked a local man with a kitchen knife, maiming him and causing him to lose an eye. Naturally, the ABC’s objective focus shifted immediately to the threat of the far-right. They titled their coverage: “How the Belfast attack played into the hands of Britain’s far right.”
In fact, they seemed utterly obsessed with that angle, peppering the piece with it repeatedly:
• “While UK leaders have called for calm after the arrest, in many ways the Belfast attack has played into the hands of Britain’s far right.”
• “The Belfast stabbing is exactly the type of violent incident the far-right likes to pounce on.”
• “Meanwhile, convicted criminal and far-right figure Tommy Robinson is seeking to capitalise on it.”
• “Belfast is firing up right-wing figures far beyond Northern Ireland’s borders.”
Because apparently, you have to be a far-right extremist to be upset when a citizen is nearly murdered by a refugee on the street.
On the other hand, consider what happens when a children’s book illustrator spouts genuine far-left extremism online. Following the tragic mass shooting at a Jewish Bondi Beach celebration, illustrator Matt Chun published an essay titled “We Don’t Mourn Fascists”.
Did the ABC refer to him as a far-left extremist or a hate-monger? Not a chance.
Despite mentioning his name no less than 18 times in their article about the University of Queensland Press pulping the Indigenous children’s book he illustrated, the absolute harshest criticism the ABC could muster was quoting a university platitude: “Statements made by Matt Chun do not align with the University’s policies and values.”
Do you think if Tommy Robinson illustrated a children’s book, the national broadcaster would have been quite so gentle?
And now we have the recent billboard trucks circulating through Melbourne, targeting Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan with the slogan “Ditch the Witch”. Unsurprisingly, the public broadcaster jumped on the story immediately, breathlessly proclaiming: “Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan decries sexist Melbourne billboard.”
Naturally, they rushed to quote Australia’s first female Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, who immediately deployed the M-word, asking: “Why should women and girls in Victoria be subjected to such visible misogyny?”
That is a bit rich coming from a former Prime Minister who fundamentally altered the Sex Discrimination Act to make it unlawful to discriminate on the grounds of gender identity.
Interestingly, back in 2013, when Gillard was ruthlessly dumped as Labor Leader by Kevin Rudd due to tanking opinion polls, she didn’t label that brutal internal party campaign against her as sexist or misogynistic. But of course, using the word “witch” against a female Labor leader today is automatically deemed a crisis of systemic misogyny.
What about in 2022, when senior Labor MP Tanya Plibersek publicly remarked that children would be “very frightened” watching Liberal Leader Peter Dutton on television, comparing his appearance to the Harry Potter villain Lord Voldemort? She apologised, and Dutton accepted it, but did Julia Gillard or the ABC write a single think-piece on anti-male bullying in politics? Certainly not.
But fast forward to right now, and the ABC is running headlines like: “Hundreds protest as One Nation leader Pauline Hanson greets supporters at Perth event.”
They openly noted that left-wing activists were shouting vitriolic chants against her, specifically: “Pauline Hanson go to hell, take your racists there as well.”
Did the ABC call this out as explicit misogyny? Did they stand up for a female political leader being told to “go to hell” by an angry mob? Not a chance. The protesters also chanted: “migrants allowed, but racists are not.”
That doesn’t sound like particularly inclusive language from the left. What if the incoming migrants happen to hold deeply conservative or racist views themselves? It is a very real concern. I am actively involved in many local migrant communities, and by progressive Australian standards, their views on race, gender, and sexuality are often incredibly traditional, if not outright discriminatory. But according to the progressive left, migrants by default are beyond criticism, while Pauline Hanson and her supporters deserve to be told to rot in hell.
To top it all off, the ABC article happily displayed a photograph of a car with the words “F*** Pauline” spray-painted across the side.
No mention of institutional sexism. No mention of misogyny.
Just the ABC being “impartial” on the public dime.
