Tuesday, I started to reassemble the IBM PC 350, which didn't go exactly to plan. Many of the repaired standoffs broke, and the DOS driver's I found for the ESS Solo-1 sound card never saw the card. But the mechanical hard drive formatted without issue, and the CD-ROM drive is seen by the BIOS.
Maybe I should rewind a bit. Normally I'd buy an ISA sound card for a computer that has so many ISA slots, but I plan to install OS/2 on this computer at some point, so DOS compatibility wasn't the main shopping point this time. While browsing eBay, I found this IBM sound card, open box but otherwise complete, and realized that it was OS/2 compatible. So rationalizing what any OS/2 user wanting a sound card might do (go to IBM for one), I decided this sound card was the right one for this project.
Except that its #DOScember, so of course I have to try to get DOOM running... with sound. I installed PC-DOS 2000, and the DOS drivers for this card, and kept getting errors that the card was not found. Perhaps I need to use MS-DOS instead?
Will I break more plastic? Will the sound card work in MS-DOS? Will I resort to using a Windows 98 computer to test the sound card? You'll have to watch to find out!
