By the year 1970, the eccentric and brilliant millionaire Howard Hughes had lived a reclusive life for 12 years. That same year, Clifford Irving, a relatively successful novelist and investigative reporter, hatched a scheme with his friend Richard Suskind, where they would write a purported 'autobiography' of the reclusive millionaire and sell it to his publisher, McGraw-Hill. Thinking that Hughes had been so withdrawn from public life that he would never risk the publicity from publicly denouncing the hoax or suing them, they would find out that they had badly miscalculated.
