While technically an Egyptian property, the Suez Canal had been run by a British and French-owned company until it was nationalised by Egyptian President Gamal Abdel-Nasser in 1956. Unable to accept the loss of such an important asset, the British and French conspired with the Israel to retake the Suez Canal and remove Nasser from power. However, American and Soviet pressure would eventually force the British and French into a humiliating withdrawal, and strengthened Nasser's position in power.
