He confessed to killing 350 people, including his mother, and involvement in about 3,000 murders as he criss-crossed the interstate highways of the United States with his sometimes-partner, Otis Toole. Texas police were eager to believe him and cleared at least 213 murders that Lucas had confessed to. Henry Lee Lucas was convicted of 11 murders and sentenced to death for the murder of an unidentified woman wearing orange socks in Texas. But was Lucas even really a serial killer? Or just a habitual liar who made false confessions to get privileges?
Note that this program was made in 1995. Quite a few things have happened since then:
1) Otis Toole died in prison in 1996.
2) Lucas' death sentence was commuted to life imprisonment by then-Florida Governor George W. Bush in 1998, as he was found to have been in Florida at the time of the murder of Debra Jackson ("Orange Socks") in Texas. He died in prison in 2001.
3) In 2010, Benny Tijerina, Jr. was arrested for the murder of Frank "Kevin" Key and Rita Salazar after new DNA evidence. He was sentenced to 40 years in prison after pleading guilty in 2012.
4) The unidentified woman known as "Orange Socks" was finally identified in 2019, almost 40 years after her death, as Debra Jackson by a DNA match with her surviving sister through the DNA Doe Project. Her case remains unsolved, as there is strong evidence Lucas was in Florida at the time she was murdered
5) At least 20 of Lucas' claimed murders have been conclusively proved to be false claims using DNA evidence as of 2020.
