In a time when ordinary Americans endured much suffering during the Great Depression, few shed any tears for the rich bankers and businessmen that were robbed by the outlaws and gangsters that sprang up in the 1930s. Easily among the most famous of these outlaws was John Herbert Dillinger.
Time and time again over the course of a year, Dillinger and his gang slipped or shot their way through the many police, and later, federal agents that tried to catch or kill him. To the FBI, he was the first 'Public Enemy Number One'. To the hundreds of thousands of ordinary Americans that cheered him on, he was a modern-day American Robin Hood.
Note that this episode was made in 1992. In 2019, Dillinger's niece and nephew planned to have his grave exhumed in order to verify that it really was John Dillinger buried there, but cancelled their plans in January 2020.
