From 1992 to 1996, ValuJet was the darling low-cost airline of shareholders. It was the fastest airline to make a profit in American history, thanks to aggressive (many would say reckless) cost-cutting measures like outsourcing maintenance to subcontractors and flying used aircraft. On 11 May 1996, ValuJet Flight 592 would demonstrate just how expensive 'low-cost' could be.
Note that this program was made in 1997. AirTran Airways, the successor to ValuJet, was absorbed by Southwest Airlines in 2014. As of 2020, Mary Schiavo is an aviation attorney and CNN aviation analyst who often comments on aviation incidents, most recently on the Boeing 737 MAX crashes.
