The Horrors of AC-47 Spooky and AC-130 Spectre
How did a 105 mm howitzer end up inside a cargo plane? This military history documentary tells the full story of the American side-firing gunship, the AC-47 Spooky and the AC-130 Spectre. The video covers the odd idea behind both aircraft. You point the guns out the side and fly in a circle. The fire then stays locked on one spot on the ground for hours. The video covers the Douglas AC-47, a World War II transport fitted with three miniguns, and how it earned the name Puff the Magic Dragon over the Mekong Delta in 1964. It gets into the loose flare incident that earned Airman John Levitow the Medal of Honor. It then follows the move to the AC-130 Spectre and the truck hunting missions over the Ho Chi Minh Trail in Laos. The video covers the Black Crow sensor that found trucks hidden under the jungle canopy, the flying laboratory nicknamed Thor, and the day someone finally put a 105 mm howitzer on the plane.
