The American WWI Gun Still Fighting in Vietnam
The Browning Automatic Rifle was built for a war that ended before it could prove itself. This military history documentary covers the full story of the BAR, the weapon German and Japanese soldiers learned to fear in the Second World War. John Browning designed the M1918 around a tactic called walking fire. The video covers what that tactic actually meant. It also covers the French Chauchat, which proved the idea worked but failed as a weapon.
The video gets into how Browning's gas operated system finally made a full power rifle cartridge work in automatic fire. You'll learn why General Pershing held the BAR back in 1918 instead of sending it straight to the front. The video covers the 1938 M1918A2 update, where the Army added a bipod, a rate reducer and a lot of extra weight. Most of those changes made the rifle worse at the one thing it did best.
Then came World War 2. The video covers how the BAR ended up as the only automatic weapon inside the American infantry squad. It compares that squad to the German one, which was built around a single machine gun. In the Pacific, Marines put the BAR gunner at the front of every patrol, and Japanese troops learned fast which American in the squad mattered most. By 1944 the Marines had tripled the number of BARs per squad. The video also covers Korea, the failed M14 program, and the M60 that finally replaced the old rifle after roughly fifty years of service.
