I review the 1924 silent version of THE HANDS OF ORLAC. This re-teams director Robert Weine and star Conrad Veidt five years after THE CABINET OF DOCTOR CALIGARI. An early example of what later became known as body horror, ORLAC has been adapted and lifted from so many times that the story feels familiar even to those who have never seen it. Veidt’s performance is the key factor and he is mesmerizing throughout. Eureka has released the newest restoration as part of their Masters of Cinema line. In spite of one visual issue the quality of the source is very good and Eureka has put together a nice extras package. The new score is good in places but gets overbearing in others.
The alternate cut of the film is included as well in standard definition.
