This may be the first time I am mentioning this here: My anchor issues have been eliminated since this video was shot. My new 45 pound Mantus has been flawless, even if I used it with a short scope, and there will be video showing that someday. It's actually been hard to not mention my new savior anchor so far because it has worked out so good, but my Mantus story of success begins here with the failure of earlier experiences using inferior equipment. It is a shame how often my stress levels could have been reduced back when I started this trip if I had good ground tackle and a better understanding of how to use it. I did, however, know enough to 'know your limits' and I felt I made the right choice this time to not join my friend in this spot he found. I did eventually talk to a few sail boat liveaboards from Salt Run and they spoke of dragging anchor quite often when the wind picked up. That might be fine for what I call a 'floater', which is what I was in Tampa for a long time; A person who lives on a boat and stays in one place for a long time. But my buddy and I were travelling. And busting a rudder or strut or propeller while going aground or running afoul of someone else's boat would put a big damper on things. I had also witnessed Mike's boat Good Times drag anchor a few times in the past and I was genuinely worried about him getting in a mess too. Although he always didn't like me to worry about his boat, I couldn't help myself but be concerned to the point that my mouth would dry up. Thankfully, all went well this time and my fears were unnecessary.
As for the creator of Wilson's Rescue; What can I say? I'm sure I speak the thoughts of many who have crossed paths with this clever man and his creation when I say, they brought a smile to my face. Inspired my mind. And left a pleasant memory for me whenever I think of my time spent on the water here in Saint Augustine. More accurately, during my visit to Salt Run. Thanks, Bill. And good luck on your next, bigger island.
