It was not well-received at the time of its release but many have come to view it as quite a faithful adaptation of the book, featuring Robert Redford in the title role and Mia Farrow as the female lead, and the supporting cast of Sam Waterston, Karen Black, Bruce Dern, Lois Chiles, and Scott Wilson.
