In 1865, the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania, having outgrown the Masonic Hall on Chestnut Street, decided to construct a new Temple in Philadelphia. The Cornerstone of the Masonic Temple was laid on June 24, 1868 by Right Worshipful Grand Master Richard Vaux. Vaux used the same gavel that George Washington had used to lay the cornerstone of the United States Capitol 75 years earlier. Construction of this magnificent structure was completed in 1873.
The Masonic Temple is a monumental Norman Revival box built of brick-backed granite, rising three stories! Its massive footprint is approximately 150 feet on Broad Street and Juniper Street sides and 250 feet on the Filbert and Cuthbert Street sides. It is complemented by two asymmetrical towers. The taller tower reaches a height of 232 feet!
In accordance with Masonic tradition, the granite stones that make up the exterior of the Temple were cut, squared, marked, and numbered at the quarries. They were then brought to the construction site ready to take their places!
