Many wounds in the Civil War were caused by the Minie Ball. The Minie Ball was made out of soft lead and would flatten out upon impact causing devastating damage to the human body...often splintering bones and ripping flesh. Amputation was the most common surgical procedure during the American Civil War. Over 60,000 amputations were performed during the conflict. Minie Ball wounds that were left untreated led to diseases and then to death.
