Harrison became the first member of the Whig Party to win the presidency...easily defeating the incumbent, Martin Van Buren, in the Election of 1840. Harrison largely won on the back of his "Log Cabin" Campaign which portrayed him as a common man of the people. Harrison's inaugural speech, given in inclement weather, was the longest in American history. Harrison fell ill...and one month later passed away. He was the first president to die in office.
