In the Arctic wilderness of Sápmi, young Daniel dreams of becoming a reindeer herder — a calling deeply rooted in Sámi tradition but almost impossible to enter unless you inherit it. In Sámi culture, reindeer herding is passed down within families, and Daniel’s own family, though Sámi, are not reindeer herders. Without that lineage, his dream seems unreachable — until a remarkable gift changes everything.
Nearby, Leif and Isabell, elders in a dwindling herding community, face retirement with no one to carry their legacy forward.
When their paths cross, a remarkable act of generosity changes everything. The couple decides to gift their entire reindeer herd to Daniel — a young man who carries their culture’s future in his language, his heart, and his hands.
"The Gift" is a visually stunning Nordic documentary about heritage, friendship, and the resilience of Sámi culture. Filmed in Arjeplog, Swedish Lapland, it explores the disappearing traditions of reindeer herding, the revival of a lost language, and the power of giving something greater than oneself.
