The global antibiotic pipeline has reached a critical point. Small companies working on new antibiotics continued to struggle, and existing incentives were still too limited to generate the scale of innovation needed, especially in major markets. Yet promising developments were emerging across the Global South. Countries such as India, Brazil, South Africa, and Thailand were demonstrating new ways to advance discovery, manufacturing, and clinical trials. These efforts showed how locally driven innovation could reshape the future of antibiotics and expand global access.
This World Health Summit 2025 Global Health Lab session – co-hosted by the Global Antibiotic Research and Development Partnership (GARDP) – explored where the next generation of antibiotics might come from. The session was moderated by Peter Beyer (Global Antibiotic Research & Development Partnership, GARDP). It examined how scientific ecosystems in the Global South were advancing antimicrobial innovation and how collaboration could accelerate progress.
The Speakers, Pinyo Rattanaumpawan (Mahidol University, Thailand), Glenda E. Gray (University of the Witwatersrand Johannesburg), James Anderson (International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers & Associations, IFPMA), Nathalie Ernoult (Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières, MSF), and Maneesh Paul (Microvioma Pvt. Ltd.) discussed lessons from discovery science, clinical research, manufacturing, and access advocacy. They highlighted strengths within emerging research hubs and reflected on how diverse innovation models could contribute to the global response to antimicrobial resistance.
The session emphasized that a more distributed and equitable innovation ecosystem could help drive the development of new antibacterial treatments and strengthen global preparedness.
