From 2016 to 2018, AMD had no direct competitors to Nvidia's flagship GPU. It wasn't until the second generation of Vega, in the form of the Radeon VII, that AMD would find themselves back at the top, vying for the custom of gamers with deep pockets.
Or at least, that's the narrative from AMD's perspective. In reality, the Radeon VII was scarcely available, only competed with the previous generation Geforce flagships in performance, and was left looking a little less impressive in the wake of the RTX launch. Its party trick was its 16GB of HBM2 VRAM, which had little reason to exist in a gaming product in 2019. Almost 5 years later, has the VII finally found its niche?
