The Flying Scotsman at The Birthplace of the Railways - The Locomotion Railway Museum in Shildon Co Durham. I visited Locomotion railway museum at various points throughout 2025 and twice saw the iconic Flying Scotsman, the worlds most famous steam train, capturing it, it all of its glory. Shildon held the first fare-paying passenger railway journey in the world, which took place on 27 September 1825 on the Stockton and Darlington Railway line and this year (2025) is the 200 year anniversary of this event, which changed the world. As well as visiting the Locomotion No.1 Railway museum, I always visit the newly opened New Hall, an £8m collections building at Locomotion in Shildon, with over 100 vehicles on display, celebrating the role of Shildon as the world’s first railway town, making it the largest undercover collection of historic rail vehicles anywhere in Europe.
