Greenville Fire/Rescue serves as the hub of eastern North Carolina, home to a Level One trauma center covering 29 counties and one of the only large metro departments in the state running its own paramedic transport.

After losing 100 employees to a staffing shortage and naming a mental health crisis in the fire service directly, the department moved its schedule from 24/48 to 24/72 in a matter of months, a 56-hour week down to 42, becoming the first department in North Carolina to make the switch.
