The City of Napa Public Works Department plans, builds and maintains the streets, sidewalks, drainage systems, city facilities and vehicle fleet that Napa depends on. The department employs more than 80 people.
Napa voters approved Measure G, adding one cent to the local sales tax to fund a list of projects the community itself helped assemble. A citizens' oversight committee reviews each completed project against that original list and confirms the funds were tracked correctly.
Measure G allows Napa Public Works to work proactively rather than reactively. The department runs its own in-house paving crew, which can shift schedules within a day or two when priorities change.
Napa purchased the former Harvest Middle School property using Measure G funds. The city is planning a community center and pool on the site.
Project design in Napa is driven by collision data and community feedback, with staff working directly in neighborhoods before construction begins.
