This is one of the scenes that came as a surprise after I dusted off my Nikon camera to celebrate the first real day of summer. I did every technical mistake in the book that evening that started with a bird video with all the wrong settings. Then I noticed the midgets on my way back, coming up from a pond with the sun at a perfect angle and i had lots of fun for a short while. Like sometimes when something strange meets the eye, I tend to forget to set up the camera perfectly, started with the focus set on "continuous track" from previous bird task, and you can just imagine how busy my Nikon got chasing midgets, so this messed up the first shots but this wasn't easy as for the time frame i had, a little gust of wind or a little cloud in front of the sun was enough to stop the show, so i had to move fast. The results were technically imperfect, I should have used a higher f value for better focus but i loved the practice since iv'e been wanting to visit lake Mývatn for some time to get capture the huge midget show we get there annually. And to be able to shoot this at 120fps and slow it down was exactly what this scene needed. So despite the technical flaws, my camera did a great job.
Midges can be found all over Iceland but they are not a problem where this video was shot, in the town of Akureyri. But we have a lake named after them, Lake Mývatn, and the reason is herem the real deal:
